Types of screens The key element of a graphical laser show is the projection surface. A large number of existing structures may be utilized, such as the side of a large building or a mountainside. Under ideal conditions, even clouds may be used. For most events, however, a specially designed projection screen is utilized.
For outdoor events, the screen is selected according to the anticipated audience size. Above, a 25'x50' scrim is shown that is popular for many medium sized events. These screens may be used with either front or rear projection, which is usually determined by the size of the performance area. |

|
When
possible, and when audience size dictates a larger-than-life projection,
a large unobstructed building surface is an ideal screen. Building
surfaces are also ideal for large scale advertising campaigns. See
logo projections for more
examples.

For indoor events, screen size is usually dictated by the size of the
venue. In addition to conventional front surface projection
screens, a number of innovative solutions are available.
A nearly invisible lightweight scrim is an ideal rear-projection surface. Only the image projected on the screen is visible. Above, guests are treated to 'laser Koi', as the inside of large glass structure is transformed into a fishbowl. This effect was achieved by laminating a very lightweight scrim to the glass surface, and then providing rear-projection from outside the structure. |

Sometimes, a more dramatic presentation of the image is desired. In this case, a water-based fog or haze is used with a medium weight scrim and rear projection. The result is an incredible holographic effect. The 3D Beam Show Page has examples of the same screen surface used with aerial beam effects .
